Tulku
75 minutes
“In the 1970s something interesting started happening, Tulkus were being discovered in the West. I know because I was one of them.”

During the golden age of Tibetan Buddhism in the 16th century, one in four Tibetans was a monk. It was during this time that a tradition originated--upon the passing away of an enlightened teacher, a young child would in time be recognized as his reincarnation. The child would assume leadership over the predecessor’s monastery as well as the surrounding villages. They called these children Tulkus, and filmmaker Gesar Mukpo is one of them. In this film, he sets out to meet others like him; young people struggling between the modern and ancient, between East and West. All of them have been recognized when they were children as reincarnations of great Tibetan Buddhist masters, but each of them is coming to terms with this fate in very different ways.
