6 pm Opening Night reception
7:30 pm Opening Night ceremony, opening program & film I AM
An international group of Theravada Buddhist monks from such places as Thailand, Sri Lanka, Cambodia and India will perform our very special opening ceremony. Theravada ("Teaching of the Elders") Buddhism dates back close to the lifetime of the historical Buddha, and follows well-established traditions and beliefs handed down through the centuries. The monks will chant sacred Buddhist sutras while performing this unique ceremony. This ceremony is often performed at the beginning of important or auspicious events.
Hugh Byrne, teacher and co-founder of the Washington Buddhist Peace Fellowship, will speak during the opening program. He will explore how our opening night selection I AM, while not a Buddhist film, actually embraces Buddhist teachings as it shows how principles of cooperation, compassion and interdependence are universal, and resonate at the very core of humanity. Hugh was recently named by the Washington City Paper as DC's "Best Contender for Guru Status," an honor that has given him a good chuckle!
We then screen the film I AM.
"THE TRANSFORMATIONAL MOVEMENT HAS A GREAT FRIEND IN TOM SHADYAC. He delivers esoteric knowledge to a popular audience, expressing the intersection of ancient wisdom and modern consciousness in a way both entertaining and enlightening. I AM IS A SPARK OF LIGHT AND A WORK OF LOVE"

10 am Mindful Parenting Panel and Q & A 90 min. FREE
This program is available free of charge thanks to the generous support of the Budding Yogis yoga studio for kids, teens and families in Washington, DC.
Most parents are doing their best to be present for their children. They want to truly enjoy the years they have with them, and avoid reacting in ways that cause harm to their children or to themselves. This, of course, can be one of the most challenging aspects of mindfulness practice.
Connecting with other parents can really help provide support on this journey. Several longtime mindfulness practitioners will share the challenges and joys of bringing mindfulness into their own families. They will share what has been most helpful. They will also give examples of some of their less mindful parenting moments -- a few of which have been surprising and even humorous. There will be an opportunity to ask questions of the panel, as well as time to connect with other like-minded parents.
Free on-site child care will be available during this 10 - 11:30 am family program.
11 am - Noon Film Cave in the Snow. This is a special event that is being presented in combination with our 1 pm talk & meditation with Ruth King. One $15 ticket covers both events. Buy Tickets

"Ruth King has articulated the painful history, patterns and traps of a raging heart, and offers the skillful means for liberation in their very midst. This is revolutionary work." --Jack Kornfield
2:30 - 3 pm Ruth King will be signing copies of her book Healing Rage and her Emotional Wisdom Cards.
3 pm Blessed By A Rare Event -- The Kalachakra for World Peace
An amazing thing is happening to us. This July, HH the Dalai Lama will be performing the rare public initiation called The Kalachakra for World Peace right here in DC. It's an 11-day spiritual conclave that revolves around the creation of a sacred sand mandala that embodies a multi-dimensional realm of being.
HH the Dalai Lama performs this incredible initiation as a way of sowing the seeds of enlightenment on a mass scale, in order to "turn the wheel" -- recalibrate and move forward into a new time. Thousands of monks and pilgrims from all over the world will travel long distances to be at the Kalachakra. Those of us living in this area are blessed to already be here.
In the spirit of Kalachakra, Hugh Byrne, co-founder of the Washington Buddhist Peace Fellowship, will bring us a talk & meditation on finding a place of inner peace -- one that allows us to be agents of peace in a new and changing world. Also present will be a representative from the Kalachakra who will talk to us about the significance of this special moment in time.
We then screen director Werner Herzog's acclaimed film WHEEL OF TIME, which documents the Kalachakra held in India in 2004. It's a beaufitul and sweeping look at what we can expect here in Washington, DC.
Ticket includes Hugh Byrne's talk & meditation, the discussion about the upcoming Kalachakra, and the film WHEEL OF TIME. $15 Buy Tickets
